August, 2023

Hello, I'm Mrs. Daly.

My art teaching journey began 22 years ago in 2001, time has quickly flown by and it's now my 10th year here at Aurora Academy.  Art is my passion and I love to share all that I know to my students as well as experimenting with new and challenging materials and projects. I take pride having been a former student of the world famous Wayne Thiebaud and I belong to Plein Aire Painters of Colorado. I love to go outside into the nature to paint our beautiful scenery. I never let an opportunity pass when I can create art so I never leave home without a drawing pad, small paint set and colored pencils. I love to turn simple shapes and doodles into art and will always take the time to learn something new.

I earned my BA in Art Studio at UC Davis and studied Art Education at California State University Sacramento where I received my single subject Teaching Credential in Art. I am also endorsed in Language Arts and taught High School English for 6 yrs in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I love to include literature as a part of the art curriculum as inspiration for art projects.

I am excited for the new weekly rotation in specials. Students will be using materials that are on the homeroom list. The art curriculum will stay the same, which is based on both Colorado Common Core Standards and Core Knowledge.   My art projects are student centered around encouraging individual creativity. Students will learn new art vocabulary, culture, historical periods and art movements.  This is an academic class where we learn as we have fun.

There are many reasons why I love to teach art and this article truly reflects how I feel:

Why Teach Art, based on an article by Tina Farrell:

ART IS A SCIENCE

We mix colors to create other colors; we learn how paint is made with pigments and observe how art materials can change from fluid to solids.

ART IS MATHEMATICAl

We utilize rulers and other math tools in rendering. We observe to learn and understand spatial relationships, linear perspective, technical shading of form, symmetry and  asymmetry, and a knowledge of geometrical and organic shapes. Many works of art require the artist to develop exact measurements of size and weight.

ART IS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Many of the terms commonly used in art originate from a variety of languages like: Italian, German, Latin, and French. Words such as: appliqué, Bas Relief, tromp-l'oeil, chiaroscuro, monochrome, gouache, and sgraffito. Vocabulary in art is a blend of many cultures and therefore becomes its own unique language. Artists speak a foreign language.

ART IS HISTORY

Art reflects the environment, culture, and often the political conditions of the time and place in which it was created. The artworks of the world are mankind's greatest records of his history on planet earth. . History is simply not history without the artifacts that support its existence. Artists record history.

ART IS LANGUAGE ARTS

Art is a higher form of communication. As artists translate the world around them, stories of bravery, heroism, valor, sorrow, and hope emerge into narratives of imagery, characters, and settings.  Artists are communicators.

ART IS PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Art requires fantastic coordination of the fingers, hands, arms, and body. The hand and the eye must work in perfect harmony in order to create. Artists are fit for life.

ART IS TECHNOLOGY

Great works of art are now created on computers requiring artists to have highly developed computer skills and knowledge. Graphic arts and communication professions have changed dramatically with the use of this tool. Artists are visionaries.

ART IS ALL OF THESE THINGS, BUT MOST OF ALL, ART IS ART

It allows a human being to take all of these dry, technical, and difficult techniques and use them to create intense beauty, and powerful emotional response. This is one thing that science cannot duplicate, mathematics cannot calculate, foreign language cannot translate, history cannot legislate, and physical education cannot replicate.

I am ready to start a new school year and excited to have the kids in person!

Kind regards,

Mrs. Daly
