History:
Aurora Academy is the first Charter School in the Aurora Public School District opening its doors in the fall of 2000. The purchase and renovation of the building, the completion of the charter application and the development of the school’s curriculum and standards were all done by a small dedicated group of parents and community members who believed there was a need for a K-8 school dedicated to excellence and integrated learning based on the Core Knowledge model.
Community Involvement:
Families continue to play a vital role in making Aurora Academy a success. The volunteer program has been overwhelmingly successful and on average logs over 13,500 hours of parent volunteer time annually.
Academic Progress:
Since the school’s inception, Aurora Academy has proven to be an exemplary place to learn and grow. With a student population near 540 each academic year, 90% of its students stay with the school to complete their elementary and middle school education. Aurora Academy consistently outperforms district and state schools in producing high scores in nationwide assessments. The school has been recognized by the Colorado Department of Education as a School of Distinction. Aurora Academy has also been honored three times with the Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Award, an honor presented for having some of the highest rates of growth on student assessments.
