Meet the Team
Literacy
As a literacy intervention team, we work closely with classroom teachers, to provide extra reading support and instruction to students. We work extensively with students to help them improve specific reading skills such as letter-naming, initial sounds, phoneme segmentation, and comprehension strategies. We also collaborate with classroom teachers to set learning goals for students that meet their needs. Our goal is to help students develop proficient reading skills that will contribute to their academic growth.
Ms. Cory
Welcome! I am Katie Cory. I have been on staff at Aurora Academy since 2012. After 11 years leading the Kindergarten team and one year in 2nd grade, I am excited to focus on reading by supporting our teachers and students! I earned my bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education at The University of Texas. In 2015, I completed a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction and last May completed a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from American College of Education. I have three amazing adult daughters that have all ventured out of Colorado to live and begin their careers; Rebecca, Brianna and Jessica! I coach indoor volleyball for AACS and a local club team. In my free time I enjoy crocheting, beach volleyball, camping and spending time with my family.
Ms. Forrest
My name is Mickey Forrest and this is my eleventh year teaching reading intervention at Aurora Academy Charter School. My background and experience ranges from preschool to elementary education, high school and elementary special education. I have a dual Bachelor of Science degree in elementary and special education from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.
I have been teaching for many, many years and enjoy working with elementary school aged children. Teaching children to read has been my passion for a very long time and I enjoy the reward of watching the progress from the beginning of the year to the end of the school year!
I have two children of my own. They both live here in Colorado. If your child is a student in one of my reading groups; please do not hesitate to call or email me with any questions concerns or ideas to keep your child reading to achieve grade level success!
Ms. Palmer
I am excited that this year I will be serving as a reading interventionist to support students and teachers in and out of the classroom. This is my 26th year teaching elementary school mostly in the 4th and 5th grades. Last year, I enjoyed my time as a 4th grade teacher here at Aurora Academy. I have been part of this community as a parent for the past 10 years. I graduated with a BS from Purdue University and earned a Masters of Elementary of Education from the University of Missouri - St. Louis. I enjoy reading, period films, and road trips with my kids. I am looking forward to a great school year!
